The United Kingdom's National Crime Agency (NCA) will set up a new team to proactively investigate cryptocurrency crime, called the UK Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU) Crypto Unit (" Crypto Unit ").

The NCA confirmed that the encryption team will initially consist of five officers from the NCCU. The government agency will provide support to existing and new investigations that require professional cryptocurrency experience, and will take an active leadership role in identifying potential targets for further investigations.

An NCA spokesperson noted that the agency's interest in stopping cryptocurrency crime is nothing new, however, the formation of this new team shows the agency's increased focus on regulating crypto assets.

Candidates with a background in blockchain forensic investigations have until January 10 to apply for the position, and if successful, candidates can expect a salary of between $48,200 and $52,400.

The UK has been increasing its public sector powers to rein in cryptocurrencies that fuel illegal activities. According to its latest annual report, the NCA confiscated nearly £27 million ($33 million) worth of crypto assets in the 2021-22 financial year.
