In early Asian trading on Wednesday, Japanese equities came under clear pressure, with the Nikkei 225 falling as much as 3% intraday to around 61,130 points, while the Topix slipped about 1.9% to roughly 3,860. Artificial intelligence, semiconductors and related equipment stocks led the decline, leaving the Nikkei under far heavier strain than the broader Topix and suggesting investors were sharply cutting high-valuation exposure to the AI supply chain.

Japan's technology sector was at the center of the sell-off. Semiconductor test equipment maker Advantest fell 6.4%, chip manufacturing equipment supplier Tokyo Electron dropped 5%, SoftBank Group slid about 7% and memory chip maker Kioxia plunged more than 10%. Companies linked to data center construction were also hit, with optical fiber cable maker Fujikura down 8.2% and Furukawa Electric down 9%. These firms had earlier benefited from the global expansion of AI infrastructure, but are now facing concentrated position cuts as policy expectations shift.

Market worries were driven mainly by early results in the U.S. midterm elections. With Democrats making gains in some key districts, investors began reassessing how a shift in the balance of power in Congress could affect the technology industry. There are fears that if Democrats ultimately take control of both chambers, U.S. regulation of AI data center construction could become stricter, weighing on the pace of global AI infrastructure investment. Betting volumes on prediction markets tied to the election have approached $1.5 billion, but final control of the House and Senate remains uncertain.

Market internals showed the decline was not broad-based. Among Nikkei 225 constituents, 130 stocks fell and 95 rose, indicating selling pressure was concentrated in AI, semiconductors, memory and data center infrastructure. Global AI capital expenditure expansion had earlier propelled Japanese suppliers to large gains. Investors are now reassessing the durability of massive spending and have become more sensitive to policy uncertainty.

Strong overnight results from some U.S. chip and server companies failed to stem the pullback in Japanese tech shares, suggesting near-term trading was being driven more by macro and policy expectations. If similar concerns continue to build, Asian markets with heavy exposure to the AI supply chain, such as South Korea and Taiwan, could also face outflow pressure.

Investors will next watch how U.S. stocks open and the final midterm results. If U.S. AI and semiconductor shares continue to slide, Asian tech stocks could stay under pressure; if U.S. markets stabilize, the sharp drop in Japanese equities may ease. At the same time, if risk-off sentiment intensifies, the yen and Japan's government bond market could face further volatility.
