The global precious metals market underwent an extreme stress test from macroeconomic pressures in the third quarter. Despite the combined onslaught of persistent inflation, tightening monetary policy, and a sharp surge in U.S. Treasury yields, gold prices delivered a solid performance. According to the latest research from Invesco, although the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets has increased significantly due to soaring bond yields, gold prices still accumulated a 3.7% gain in the third quarter, closing at $1,957 per ounce at the end of September.

Behind this counter-trend rally lies a profound evolution in gold's pricing logic. Data shows that at the end of September, the yields on 10-year and 30-year U.S. Treasuries reached 5.28% and 5.63% respectively, both hitting their highest closing levels since 2002. Under the traditional framework, rising real yields typically suppress gold performance, but this historical correlation has significantly weakened in recent years. Following the freezing of foreign exchange reserves in certain countries, global central banks have embarked on strategic accumulation. This price-insensitive buying has fundamentally reshaped the floor support for gold.

Looking ahead to the final quarter of the year, the complexity of the macroeconomic environment remains unabated. Inflation stickiness persists, and after the Federal Reserve raised the target range for the federal funds rate to 3.75% to 4.00% in September, the market continues to weigh expectations for further policy tightening in the short term. Although the latest Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation data came in slightly below expectations, reducing the probability of a rate hike in October to around 21%, robust economic fundamentals continue to push up long-end bond yields, creating sustained headwinds for gold prices.

Counterbalancing the short-term macro pressures are structural bright spots on the demand side. After a period of declining holdings, global physically backed gold exchange-traded products saw a turning point in the third quarter, with holdings climbing to a 12-month high by the end of September. Meanwhile, central banks' considerations regarding the safety of reserve assets and geopolitical risks have kept official sector gold purchasing enthusiasm high. Central bank gold purchases in the second quarter of this year even set a new record for the same period in history.

Facing a potentially complex landscape that may persist into the fourth quarter, market participants need to be wary of liquidity shocks. In an environment where financial markets overall maintain high volatility, gold prices are highly susceptible to disruptions from sentiment and capital flows. When facing losses in other assets or margin call pressures, some institutional investors may be forced to liquidate their highly liquid gold positions, making gold highly prone to sharp fluctuations detached from fundamentals in the short term.
