Amid a recent cyclical pullback in gold prices, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) has bucked the trend by significantly increasing its allocation of gold assets. The latest data shows that China's official gold reserves increased by 21 tonnes month-on-month in September, bringing the total to 2,196 tonnes. This single-month addition not only marks the highest record in nearly three years but also extends the PBOC's consecutive gold-buying streak to 23 months. Reviewing previous operations, the central bank added 18 tonnes in July and 18.5 tonnes in August. The noticeably accelerated pace of gold purchases in September indicates that short-term price fluctuations have not shaken the authorities' preference for the long-term strategic allocation of gold.

In contrast to the steady expansion of gold reserves, China's foreign exchange reserves experienced a decline in September. As of the end of September, foreign exchange reserves stood at $3.4 trillion, down $38.1 billion month-on-month. Relevant authorities noted that this decrease was mainly driven by the strengthening of the U.S. dollar index and the overall decline in prices of major global financial assets, with exchange rate translation and asset valuation changes being the core factors. This monthly decline cannot be simply equated with capital outflows. Under the current macro environment where the domestic economy remains generally stable and new growth drivers are steadily accumulating, the scale of foreign exchange reserves has a solid foundation to maintain overall stability.

On a global scale, the wave of gold accumulation by official sectors continues unabated. According to statistics from the World Gold Council, global central banks made net gold purchases of 39 tonnes in August, pushing the year-to-date cumulative purchases to 170 tonnes. In this multi-year accumulation drive led by major central banks, China and Poland have stood out. In terms of year-to-date cumulative data, Poland ranks first with purchases of 98 tonnes, bringing its total gold reserves to 648 tonnes and moving steadily toward its target of 700 tonnes. China follows closely with a year-to-date cumulative increase of 80 tonnes. Additionally, countries such as Uzbekistan have also maintained an active pace of gold purchases.

The sustained gold purchases by central banks of major economies worldwide provide solid long-term support for official demand in the gold market, underscoring the irreplaceable role of gold in the diversification strategies of countries' reserve assets. Although historical data shows that the pace of central bank gold purchases may exhibit some seasonal variations due to economic or geopolitical uncertainties, the sustained buying by official sectors has undoubtedly bolstered market confidence. Meanwhile, participants in the financial markets remain rational, recognizing that short-term fluctuations in gold prices will continue to be influenced by a complex interplay of multiple macroeconomic factors, including the trend of the U.S. dollar, changes in U.S. Treasury yields, and global monetary policy expectations.
