The gold market opened this week with a pullback, with prices briefly dipping below $4,300 per ounce to hit a one-month low. Market sentiment was primarily weighed down by expectations that the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates by 25 basis points. However, behind these short-term price fluctuations, professional investment institutions are shifting their focus to deeper macroeconomic logic. Ryan McIntyre, President of Sprott Inc., pointed out that over-focusing on short-term tweaks to monetary policy could cause investors to miss the core investment opportunities presented by the current global expansion of sovereign debt and deteriorating fiscal stability. Gold remains an irreplaceable anchor among monetary assets.

Although gold has demonstrated strong upward momentum this year, McIntyre believes that the allocation ratio of gold by major market funds, represented by U.S. institutional investors, remains relatively low. As geopolitical frictions intensify and fiscal uncertainty rises, the value of gold as a portfolio diversification tool is becoming increasingly prominent. He argues that the true catalyst capable of sparking broader gold demand stems from the market repricing systemic financial risks, a process that could be triggered by rising bond yields or a stock market correction.

The deterioration of U.S. fiscal sustainability forms the core foundation for the bullish case for gold. McIntyre emphasized that the key to assessing fiscal health lies in the interplay between economic growth and government interest expenditures. Currently, the nominal economic growth rate in the U.S. is around 4%, while the normalized government interest costs are approaching this critical threshold. Once the interest burden exceeds the economy's own growth capacity, the fiscal system will face severe tests. Meanwhile, the performance of the bond market also suggests that policymakers' control over long-term interest rates is waning. When the government faces the dilemma of deficit adjustment versus economic growth, the traditional argument that rising interest rates increase the holding costs of gold is gradually losing its validity. Given the massive size of the U.S. economy, gold has become the only safety valve for releasing fiscal pressure, and there are no alternative assets of the same magnitude in the market.

This fiscal pressure is not limited to the United States. The debt risks faced by major global economies and core currencies further consolidate gold's unique status as an asset without corresponding sovereign liabilities. McIntyre expects that these macroeconomic pressures will ultimately drive up investment demand, with gold ETF holdings potentially reaching record highs.

Faced with the Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy decision, the market has largely priced in the expectation of a rate hike. McIntyre believes that policymakers, weighing inflationary pressures against the financial consequences of high borrowing costs, may ultimately deliver a more ambivalent outcome than the market has priced in. Regardless of whether there is a short-term rate hike, since tightening expectations have been fully factored into asset prices, the short-term pullback space for gold prices is limited and unlikely to last. In contrast, the continuously deteriorating fiscal trajectory is the key determinant of the long-term trend of gold prices.

McIntyre noted that gold essentially reflects the decline in the purchasing power of its pricing currency. As fiscal pressures rise and currency values weaken, investors need to pay more attention to this long-term relationship. He stated that regardless of how short-term interest rates change, it is difficult to fundamentally solve the underlying fiscal problems. Policy tweaks might slightly alter the pace, but the ultimate macroeconomic direction is already very clear.
