Following the U.S. Eastern Time market close on Wednesday, Meta reported its second-quarter financial results for 2026. While top-line revenue slightly surpassed Wall Street forecasts, declining net profits, lackluster third-quarter guidance, and persistently steep capital expenditures on artificial intelligence dampened investor sentiment. Shares plunged nearly 10% in after-hours trading. The earnings report highlighted a classic case of revenue growth without corresponding profit gains, prompting the market to reassess the return on investment from the tech giant’s heavy bets on the AI wave.

According to the earnings release, Meta generated $60.8 billion in second-quarter revenue, a 28% year-over-year increase that narrowly beat the consensus estimate of $60.2 billion. Core advertising revenue contributed $59.4 billion, rising 27% annually, driven by higher impression volumes and increased average selling prices. However, profitability came under severe strain. Net income fell 14% year-over-year to $15.8 billion, translating to diluted earnings per share of $6.18, significantly missing the $7.17 forecast. Even more striking was the sharp contraction in free cash flow, which plummeted from approximately $12.4 billion in the first quarter to just $784 million, marking a four-year low. Total expenses surged 55% year-over-year to $42 billion, burdened by $2.4 billion in legal settlement costs and $1.2 billion in employee severance payments, further eroding margins.

In response to investor concerns, management emphasized during the subsequent earnings call how AI technology is accelerating core business performance. The CEO noted that Meta’s advertising revenue is growing faster in dollar terms than any peer, signaling that AI investments are beginning to pay off. Currently, the AI-powered, end-to-end advertising suite, Advantage+, has reached an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $75 billion, with 9 million small businesses on the platform utilizing at least one AI ad creation tool. Furthermore, enterprise agents have launched globally on WhatsApp and Messenger, boasting over 1 million weekly active businesses. Although the company has received numerous purchase orders for compute capacity at markups far exceeding costs, executives firmly stated that monetizing hardware directly for short-term gains would be shortsighted. Instead, leveraging compute infrastructure to build proprietary intelligence and compound value over time will yield substantially higher long-term margins.

On the hardware front, the Reality Labs segment posted a 16% year-over-year revenue increase to $431 million, primarily fueled by sales of AI-enabled smart glasses. Nevertheless, the division still reported an operating loss of $4.6 billion for the period, underscoring that its hardware ambitions remain heavily capital-intensive. To support massive compute demands, Meta has designated 2026 and 2027 as critical expansion windows aimed at maximizing infrastructure reserves. To alleviate liquidity pressures, the company is exploring diversified funding avenues. For instance, it is partnering with BlackRock to construct a roughly $14 billion data center in Texas. Under this joint venture structure, the partner holds an 80% stake while Meta retains 20%. Once operational, Meta will secure the facility through a long-term lease agreement and provide a residual value guarantee.

Historically, industry-wide investment in compute infrastructure has lagged behind demand, with overall capacity expected to remain tight into the foreseeable future. However, the investor narrative has shifted from questioning the utility of AI to scrutinizing when these massive outlays will translate into sustainable free cash flow. Over the coming quarters, the trajectory of advertising growth alongside the scalable revenue performance of enterprise AI products will be pivotal in determining whether the company can navigate this transitional phase. Ultimately, the market remains on standby for clearer signals regarding the return-on-investment timeline for its compute expenditures.
