Warren Buffett has recently made significant adjustments to his wealth donation strategy. The Berkshire Hathaway chief announced an immediate donation of company stock valued at nearly $6 billion to four family foundations, setting a target to divest all remaining holdings within approximately eight years. This move marks a major pivot in his charitable arrangements, notably excluding the Gates Foundation, a long-time recipient of his philanthropy.

Under the new arrangement, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation will receive 9 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares, valued at approximately $4.5 billion. The remaining three foundations managed by his children—the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation—will each receive 1 million Class B shares. Buffett explicitly stated that all remaining shares will be donated by the end of 2034, regardless of his lifespan.

Buffett's current holdings in Berkshire Hathaway stock are valued at over $140 billion. To complete the full donation within eight years, an average of at least $17 billion must be donated annually, significantly higher than the previous scale of approximately $7 billion per year. This indicates a shift in the charitable plan from gradual annual donations to an accelerated timeline.

The most notable change in this adjustment is that the Gates Foundation will no longer receive new donations. Since 2006, Buffett has cumulatively donated stock worth nearly $48 billion to the foundation. However, as the relationship between the two parties has cooled in recent years, this partnership is coming to an end. In 2021, Buffett resigned from his position as a trustee of the Gates Foundation, after which communication between the two sides decreased. Particularly after events involving Jeffrey Epstein came to light, Buffett stated that there would be little communication until the situation was clarified. This statement formally confirms that the Gates Foundation will be excluded from future donation plans. His latest will arrangement indicates that over 99% of his wealth will go into a charitable trust with his three children serving as trustees.
