It is reported that the 30-year-old Chinese man surnamed Hu is a director of a company in Minato Ward, Tokyo, his computer stored as many as 2.9 million people's account numbers and passwords, and about 100 million email addresses, police suspect that he stored these email information for the purpose of "phishing". His computer also contained data from fake flea market apps and websites of financial institutions.
On May 1, a joint task force of Japanese police arrested Hu on suspicion of violating the Law on the Prohibition of Illegal Computer Intrusion. Investigators suspect he stole the data through phishing, asking people to enter information on fake websites, or finding it on the "dark web."
Police said the man's computer also had a software program that allowed Internet "phishing" on his computer.
Japanese police believe he is the core figure of the criminal syndicate and are considering cooperating with Chinese investigation agencies to find out the truth.
