Elon Musk's business empire is becoming more tightly linked with the US federal government. As SpaceX, Tesla and his artificial intelligence operations face key decisions on defense procurement, launch licenses, spectrum allocation, autonomous driving regulation, power supply and data center construction, the 2026 midterms are no longer just a political contest. They will also shape the position of those companies in the US policy environment over the coming years.

A research firm that tracks federal government spending and contracts said SpaceX has received about $6.78 billion in federal contracts so far this year, nearly twice the total for all of 2024. At the same time, Tesla, SpaceX and Musk's AI businesses are at multiple high-stakes regulatory junctures, and any policy shift could alter cost structures, approval timelines or order expectations.

On campaign finance, Musk has pledged to invest about $366 million in the 2026 election cycle, covering at least 40 races and making him one of the largest individual donors in this midterm cycle. Federal Election Commission filings show that since July, at least $276 million has flowed to Republican-linked groups and Musk's own political action organization, America PAC. With Republican candidates under pressure from living costs and the Iran war issue, the concentration of funding in the Republican camp has drawn more attention to the space Musk is trying to secure at the congressional and government levels.

Democrats are broadly favored to win control of the House, while the Senate race remains tight. If Democrats take either chamber of Congress, Musk could face more investigations and questioning over his companies, federal contracts and role in the Department of Government Efficiency. If Republicans maintain their advantage, it would help preserve the current policy direction and a relatively stable contract and approval environment for his companies.

A former Senate investigative official said the scale of Musk's election spending reflects calculations over congressional influence, regulatory and contract-related matters and accountability boundaries. Musk did not respond to a request for comment, but on his social platform X, he said in a post that he would not shy away from confrontation over possible Democratic-led investigations, adding that he would pursue the people truly manipulating the situation, not just the visible enforcers.

For capital markets, discussion around Musk's companies has moved beyond revenue, deliveries, launch counts or model progress. Shifts in House and Senate seats, federal contract renewals, launch and spectrum approvals, autonomous driving rules and data center power arrangements could all become important variables shaping their commercial path.
