The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME Group), a leading global derivatives market, has released its market trading data for the full year, fourth quarter, and December 2022. Data shows that the daily average trading volume of the exchange for the entire year of 2022 reached a historical record, reaching 23.3 million contracts, an increase of 19% compared to 2021. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the daily average trading volume increased from 20.5 million contracts in the fourth quarter of 2021 to 21.8 million contracts, a year-on-year increase of 6%. In December 2022, the daily average trading volume was 19.2 million contracts, a year-on-year increase of 7% compared to the 18 million contracts in the same period in 2021.
Throughout 2022, the stock index, interest rates, currency pairs, and cryptocurrency asset classes of the exchange experienced significant growth in ADV, with increases of 39%, 18%, 24%, and 82%, respectively. Contract ADV outside the United States increased by 15% to 6.3 million contracts. The Latin American contract ADV increased by 30%, Asia by 27%, and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region by 10%.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, the stock index contract ADV of Chishang Exchange increased by 26% year-on-year, the currency to contract ADV increased by 25% year-on-year, and the metal contract ADV increased by 7% year-on-year.
In December 2022, all asset classes also showed strong growth momentum. The Guaranteed Overnight Funding Rate (SOFR) futures option ADV surged by 862% year-on-year. On December 15th, the number of open positions (IO) on the Chishang Exchange reached a historical record, reaching 34832123 contracts. The ADV of metal contracts, interest rate contracts, and currency to currency contracts also jumped in the same month, reaching 400000, 7.9 million, and 1.05 million respectively, with year-on-year growth of 22%, 12%, and 20%, respectively. However, the energy contract ADV for that month showed a slight decrease, decreasing by 3% from 1.85 million contracts in December 2021 to 1.79 million contracts.
