Saffron Building Society

In 1847, there was a building association in Saffron Walden, but the only remaining record is the bank passbook currently in the county records office.

In January 1849, Reverend John Marten established the "Saffron Walden II Architectural Society" and became the first secretary.

The first chairman of the association was the local builder Joseph Durrant. By 1857, the association was originally a "termination association" and later became a permanent organization, known as the "Saffron Walden Second Benefit Building&Investment Society on the Permanent".

In April 1989, the association merged with the Herts&Essex Architectural Association located in Stortford, Bishop, consolidating its position in the region. The name of the association has been changed to Saffron Walden Herts&Essex Building Society.

In September 2006, the association was renamed the Saffron Architecture Association again.

The association continues to grow, with its assets exceeding the £ 1 billion mark for the first time in 2011. Saffron has branches in Essex, Hertfordshire, and Suffolk.
